Chief Administrative Officers (CAOs) and Town Clerks in Uganda have been urged to play a leading role in preparing their communities for the upcoming national population and housing census, scheduled to begin in early May. The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) aims to rely on these officials for census groundwork.
Preparatory work for the national census includes mapping statistical enumeration areas and recruiting population enumerators. Enumeration areas consist of 50-80 households, approximately the size of a single LC1 village. The process involves mapping these areas digitally and establishing the heads of households.
While this work has been ongoing since 2021, only about 50 districts have completed 100% of their data collection and validation, while 49 districts have finished 90% or more of the work. However, some districts, such as Yumbe, have lagged behind, with none of its 600 villages mapped.
Chris Mukiza, the UBOS executive director, emphasized the importance of CAOs and town clerks in the census process, urging them to fast-track the exercise in their respective jurisdictions. He emphasized the need for resolving budgets based on the number of enumeration areas.
The national census is scheduled to run from May 9th to May 19th, 2023. UBOS plans to have preliminary census results for all districts about a month after the conclusion of the exercise.
