WHY MPUUGA SHOULD JOIN MAO, ODINGA, AND MARCHA

By CHANGE OF GUARDS

Mathias Mpuuga is a Ugandan Member of Parliament from the leading opposition party, the National Unity Platform (NUP). He had served as the Leader of Opposition in Parliament (LOP) before being removed by his party amid allegations of being compromised by the regime. It was alleged that he received 500 million Ugandan Shillings in exchange for adopting a softer stance against the regime’s social, economic, and political injustices. This development occurred at a time when his party and its supporters were facing unprecedented levels of political persecution.

Since losing his position, Mpuuga has attempted to create a cover-up, undermine his party, and remain politically relevant. He is reluctant to declare his candidacy for the next presidential elections, instead posturing as a champion of a united opposition front and electoral reforms. However, he knows that Museveni’s autocratic regime will not entertain any meaningful electoral reforms.

By secretly accepting 500 million from the regime, Mpuuga crossed a red line and should humbly accept the consequences. Moreover, he won’t be alone in political oblivion. He will be joining other politicians like:

  1. Nobert Mao
The President General of Uganda’s oldest political party, the Democratic Party (DP). His political career began during his student days when he won a hotly contested Students’ Guild presidency. Recently, he ruined his political career by joining Museveni’s autocratic regime as a Cabinet Minister. Driven by a sense of betrayal after many Baganda supporters abandoned him for the newly formed NUP, Mao made an emotional decision to align with the regime. Like Mpuuga, he is now attempting to stay relevant by positioning himself as a champion of electoral reforms and the peaceful transfer of power.
  2. Raila Odinga
Kenya’s opposition strongman appears to be nearing the end of his political career. While his supporters had tolerated his repeated behind-the-scenes compromises with presumed adversaries, his most recent deal seems to have been the final nail in the coffin. President Ruto is now promoting Odinga for the top job at the African Union. Regardless of whether he secures the position or not, his career in Kenyan politics seems to be headed for the archives.
  3. Riek Machar
Once a formidable political opponent of South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir, Machar’s influence has dwindled after entering into a compromise with the same regime he once opposed.
