The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), once celebrated as a symbol of national security and stability, is now on the verge of collapse due to the reckless and erratic behavior of General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the son of President Yoweri Museveni. With the elder Museveni’s grip on power steadily weakening, the once-cohesive force has been reduced to a shadow of its former self. General Muhoozi’s conduct, marked by irresponsible outbursts on social media and unprofessionalism, has tainted the image of a military once known for its discipline and unity.

Godber Tumushabe’s recent revelations only confirm what many Ugandans have long feared: the UPDF is crumbling from within. Museveni, a man who built the army into a formidable force, is now watching as his son’s erratic behavior erodes its structure. Instead of strengthening the army, Muhoozi’s antics have become a source of ridicule, portraying the UPDF as a family playground where discipline is secondary to privilege.

The cracks within the army are visible to anyone who cares to look. What was once a symbol of Museveni’s stronghold is now plagued by internal conflicts and factionalism. Senior officers, once loyal to the president, are becoming increasingly frustrated with Muhoozi’s reckless conduct. It’s no longer a matter of speculation; the UPDF is facing a crisis of identity and leadership, one that Museveni is powerless to address. He may have defeated armed insurgencies, but he is losing the war at home against a more insidious enemy: his own son.

Tumushabe’s comments are a stark reminder that Muhoozi’s influence within the military is not just harmful; it’s catastrophic. The general’s sporadic outbursts have shown a blatant disregard for the established military protocols that have guided the UPDF for decades. This disregard has sown discontent among the ranks, with many officers quietly questioning why the military’s top leadership tolerates such behavior. Muhoozi’s actions have highlighted the hypocrisy of a regime that preaches discipline yet turns a blind eye to his juvenile antics.

Museveni’s attempt to transform the UPDF into a family institution is now blowing up in his face. By prioritizing blood ties over merit, Museveni has done the unthinkable—he has created a time bomb within the military. Muhoozi’s unchecked power is not just a threat to the army’s unity but also to Uganda’s stability. His erratic leadership style has left the UPDF in disarray, pitting officers against each other as they try to navigate this new era of uncertainty.

If Museveni hoped to secure his legacy through Muhoozi, he is gravely mistaken. His son’s behavior has only accelerated the disintegration of an institution that once propped up his rule. The UPDF, now riddled with factions, is on the brink of implosion. Officers who once sang Museveni’s praises now look at him with disdain, viewing him as a leader who has sacrificed the military’s integrity to appease a wayward son.

The consequences of this mismanagement are dire. Should the UPDF collapse under the weight of internal discord, it’s not just the military that will suffer but the entire nation. Museveni’s stubborn refusal to rein in Muhoozi is not only a betrayal of his comrades-in-arms but also of the Ugandan people. As the situation spirals out of control, Museveni’s legacy will be remembered not as one of a strong leader but as a weak man who let his family’s ambitions destroy the army and, ultimately, the country.
