MP Medard Sseggona’s blunt and fearless remarks expose the reality that we have long suspected but dared not speak out loud: the National Resistance Movement (NRM) is nothing but a smokescreen for President Yoweri Museveni’s ego and his insatiable thirst for power. Sseggona did not mince his words when he declared, “NRM is Museveni, and Museveni is NRM,” sending shockwaves through the political landscape. And let’s face it, this isn’t news for anyone paying attention to Uganda’s collapsing democracy. It’s just that Sseggona finally had the guts to say it on live TV.
Let’s be honest, the NRM, once touted as a revolutionary party, has been systematically transformed into nothing more than Museveni’s personal plaything. What Sseggona pointed out is the sick truth: there’s no collective decision-making within the NRM. Every move, every policy, every idiotic decree is engineered to keep the dictator in State House. The so-called party has been reduced to a puppet, its strings pulled by Museveni’s grubby hands, while his cronies line their pockets and dance to his corrupt tune.
The rot within NRM is deeper than anyone is willing to admit. Museveni, intoxicated by his own delusions of grandeur, has for decades pushed aside any semblance of internal democracy. The NRM’s structure is an elaborate joke—a dictatorship disguised as a party. Any voice that dares challenge his authority is silenced. He doesn’t want thinkers; he wants sycophants, lackeys, and yes-men. The truth, as Sseggona points out, is that the NRM is not a political institution—it is Museveni’s fiefdom, and Uganda is nothing more than his personal estate.
For Ugandans still clinging to the illusion that reform is possible within the NRM, wake the hell up! Museveni has entrenched himself as the ultimate decider, and any talk of internal reform is pure fantasy. The NRM is a hollow shell, with no ideology, no vision for the future, and certainly no desire to promote democracy. It exists solely to serve the whims of one man—a tyrant who has turned Uganda into his personal amusement park, playing god with our future.
Sseggona’s remarks are a much-needed wake-up call. He is essentially telling Ugandans to stop fooling themselves and see the NRM for what it really is—a one-man circus. Museveni is the ringleader, and everyone else is just part of his tragic sideshow. For years, the opposition has cried foul, but their voices have been drowned out by Museveni’s iron fist and the deafening silence of those too afraid to speak. But not Sseggona. He called out the emperor for what he truly is—a dictator masquerading as a democrat, clutching onto power with the desperation of a drowning man.
In the lead-up to the 2026 elections, this message should resonate loud and clear: as long as Museveni is at the helm, the NRM will remain his personal cult of sycophants. Real change will never come from within. Museveni has corrupted the system so thoroughly that any hope of reform is nothing more than a cruel joke. Sseggona’s words are not just an attack on the NRM, but a rallying cry for Ugandans to reject Museveni’s chokehold on our country once and for all.
