The ongoing chaos at Busoga University is a testament to the sheer disregard for academic standards and an insult to higher education in Uganda. This so-called “university” has become a factory for churning out worthless degrees and playing dirty games with the lives and futures of thousands of innocent students. After its license was revoked by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) seven years ago, one would expect the administration to have learned its lesson and corrected its glaring flaws. But no—this institution, dripping with arrogance, continues to brazenly operate under the radar, exploiting gullible students for cash while offering qualifications that aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on.
To even refer to this institution as a “university” is a gross misuse of the word. It’s nothing more than a scam operation parading under the guise of higher education. When the NCHE revoked its license in 2016, Busoga University had already been knee-deep in a cesspool of corruption, awarding sham degrees to over 1,000 South Sudanese students in a pathetic attempt to make a quick buck. The graduation ceremony was nothing but a mockery of academic excellence, with unqualified students walking away with fraudulent credentials, tarnishing the university’s image beyond redemption.
And now, as if the past scandals weren’t enough, this forsaken institution continues to offer unaccredited courses to at least 2,025 unsuspecting students. Lectures are being conducted in broad daylight, despite the university’s criminal record, and over 1,659 students are waiting to graduate—graduate into what, exactly? A limbo of invalidated qualifications and shattered dreams, thanks to an administration that cares more about lining its pockets than ensuring quality education. It’s an utter disgrace that, after seven years of operating without a valid license, this university is still standing. Its continued existence only highlights the extent of regulatory failure and corruption.
The audacity of Busoga University’s administration to ignore NCHE’s directives and keep its doors open is mind-blowing. This rogue institution has no right to be lecturing students, let alone promising them degrees that will hold no water in the real world. It’s nothing short of academic fraud, a swindle on a grand scale where students are duped into paying for credentials that will never be recognized. Meanwhile, the NCHE is left helpless, issuing warnings that seem to fall on deaf ears.
The so-called administrators of Busoga University need to be rounded up and prosecuted for their blatant violations. What they are running is not a university, but a criminal enterprise that has stolen the aspirations of thousands of students. If these shameless profiteers are allowed to operate even a day longer, Uganda’s higher education system will be nothing more than a breeding ground for con artists and academic charlatans.
Busoga University is an emblem of everything that’s wrong with our education system. Its doors should be slammed shut permanently, and those responsible should face the full force of the law. Letting it continue to operate is like allowing a decaying wound to fester—it’s poisoning the academic fabric of our nation. It’s time to put an end to this charade before it claims even more victims. This is not a university; it’s a den of fraud.
