The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) in Uganda has called on the public to participate in the upcoming mass registration and renewal of national identity cards. Osborn Mushabe, the NIRA spokesperson, emphasized that the renewal process provides an opportunity to update individuals’ national ID details in the system. Additionally, the new ID cards will incorporate features such as IRIS and other biometrics to align with international standards.
Millions of Ugandans registered for national IDs in 2014 and 2015, with the validity of the IDs set at ten years. As this period approaches, NIRA is gearing up for a mass renewal exercise.
Osborn Mushabe highlighted that the expiration of national IDs does not equate to the expiration of citizenship. He clarified that while national ID cards have a validity period of 10 years from the date of issue, citizenship itself is perpetual.
National IDs serve as essential travel documents within the East African region, meeting the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization, which requires the capture of the latest facial image of the document holder.
To ensure accessibility, Mushabe announced plans to conduct the renewal exercise at the parish, ward, and sub-county levels, aiming to reach all Ugandans regardless of their place of residence.
