A driver employed by the Kagadi local government has been arrested in connection with a fatal accident that occurred during a public protest over bad roads in the district.
The accident took place on Monday, February 26, at around 8:00 a.m. in the Iguruka area.
Residents of Muhoro, Bwikara, and surrounding areas were demonstrating over the poor condition of roads caused by recent rains when a vehicle belonging to the District Health Office, driven by Stephen Tibihikira, struck and killed a protester, Magezi Tumuhaise, a 25-year-old resident of Rwenzori Cell.
The driver of the vehicle, registered as UG 6998M, fled the scene but was later apprehended by the police.
“The deceased person was reportedly among the demonstrators,” said SP Allan Julius Hakiza, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) for the Albertine region.
“The driver fled the scene afterward, but he was later arrested.”
The video captured by eyewitnesses showed the government vehicle ramming into the protester, dragging him on the road for about 100 meters.
The footage has since sparked outrage on social media, with the public calling for tough penalties against the driver for reckless driving.
Tumuhaise’s body was transported to the mortuary, and authorities are urging residents to seek alternative means of resolving their grievances.
“Community members are encouraged to seek intervention from relevant authorities for amicable solutions to their issues rather than resorting to unlawful assemblies and illegal demonstrations,” said SP Hakiza.
