At least two opposition legislators have allegedly been denied access to the Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of Commonwealth Parliaments (CSCOP), happening at Munyonyo Common Wealth Resort.
Muwada Nkunyingi, MP Kyadondo East, and Nakaseke South legislator Semakula Lutamaguzi have come out to complain and accuse SFC soldiers of blocking them from accessing the speakers conference.
Nkunyingi said in a post that SFC soldiers have a list of seven opposition legislators, who have been barred from accessing the venue.
“I was forcefully chased by SFC from the accessing the ongoing Commonwealth Conference. SFC soldiers had 7 handwritten Opposition names including mine not allowed inside,” he said.
Muwada said he was grabbed at entrance and “strangely detained” for 30 minutes sorrounded by SFC who later instructed him to match out. He later shared a picture with Lutamaguzi claiming that the latter had also been denied access.
He further stated that he was formerly invited by the clerk to parliament to attend the conference and that being denied entry by SFC was intentional.
However, opposition legislators are in attendance of the conference, among them being the outgoing leader of opposition (LOP), Hon. Mathias Mpuuga. Therefore, there is no clear justification for denying the duo access to the conference.
About 33 Speakers and presiding officers are attending the conference, out of the anticipated 43. The 27th CSPOC will end on Saturday, January 6, 2024.
The Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC) was established in 1969. The move was initiated by the Speaker of the House of Commons of Canada at the time.
