Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) Executive Director, Dr. Chris Mukiza, has called on local governments to actively support preparations for the upcoming Uganda National Population and Housing Census (NPHC) 2024.
In a meeting with Chief Administrative Officers (CAOs) and Town Clerks in Kampala on Friday, Mukiza emphasized the importance of accurate statistics to ensure the quality of data and efficient planning for the census.
“The involvement of CAOs and Town Clerks in preparatory activities is essential for conducting a comprehensive census,” Mukiza stated, highlighting the crucial task of determining the size of statistical enumeration areas, each comprising 50 to 80 households.
“Digital maps of each enumeration area will be provided, ensuring that enumerators are equipped with the necessary tools for their tasks,” he added.
Uganda is scheduled to conduct the national census with the reference night set for May 9, 2024. The census will span 10 days, from May 9 to May 19, 2024. Conducted every 10 years, the census figures play a vital role in guiding planning, policy formulation, and program implementation, as well as monitoring development progress in alignment with national goals and objectives.
While acknowledging significant progress, Mukiza noted that challenges persist in some regions, with certain areas yet to be comprehensively mapped. With only 76 days remaining until the census, he stressed the urgency and called on Town Clerks to actively participate in the mapping process.
“Progress has been made in mapping enumeration areas, with 50 districts completely mapped and 100% data collected. Some areas still require mapping and completion. The exercise will be decentralized to ensure its success. 55 districts are above 90% data collected,” Mukiza explained.
To facilitate collaboration between CAOs and District Census Officers, development meetings will be conducted via Zoom, considering the digital nature of the census. The use of digital technology in collecting, processing, and disseminating census results is a key aspect of the upcoming census.
