Firearms and bullets are among some of the valuables lost following the Friday morning fire at Mutungo Police Station.
The incident is believed to have originated in the Office of the Officer in Charge and subsequently spread to other parts of the building. The Fire Prevention and Rescue Services promptly responded to the scene, successfully extinguishing the fire. Fortunately, no lives or injuries were reported.
Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesman Luke Owoyesigyire said that despite the valiant efforts of the response team, the fire resulted in the loss of significant property.
Three SMG-Rifles rifles and ammunition were lost, as the fire reached the armory, said Owoyesigyire.
Additionally, he added: “Station Diary Books stored in the Office of the Officer in Charge were also consumed by the flames.”
In a statement on Friday, Owoyesigyire said that an ongoing audit is being conducted to assess the total extent of property damage caused by the fire.
“It is noteworthy that the officers on duty managed to rescue the five detained suspects, and essential office property, such as radios and case files, was salvaged from the blaze. An immediate investigation has been initiated to determine the exact cause of the fire. The incident began at approximately 6 am in the morning, and our investigative team is committed to providing updates, as more details emerge,” said Owoyesigyire.
He assured the public that measures are being taken to address the aftermath of this unfortunate incident.
