Uganda’s veteran lawmaker and Second Deputy Prime Minister, Gen Moses Ali, has died at the age of 87.
Ali passed away at Nakasero Hospital, where he had reportedly been admitted as concern grew over his health, with family members gathering at the facility in his final days.
Confirming his death, Captain Mike Mukula described Ali as a “distinguished patriot, freedom fighter, and statesman” who devoted his life to Uganda’s peace, national unity, stability, and reconstruction. “Uganda has lost one of her finest sons,” Mukula said, extending condolences to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the government and people of Uganda, Ali’s family, and residents of Adjumani, West Nile and the country at large.
Ali had recently won re-election as Member of Parliament for Adjumani West County in the country’s general elections in January, a victory that drew wide media attention due to concerns over his advanced age.
Ali was a member of President Museveni’s ruling National Resistance Movement party and one of Uganda’s longest-serving political and military figures, with a public career spanning more than five decades. He served as Second Deputy Prime Minister from 2021, having previously held the post of First Deputy Prime Minister from 2016 to 2021, and Third Deputy Prime Minister from 2011 to 2016.
