Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) has successfully renewed its prestigious Mbarara University Research Ethics Education Program (MUREEP) with a five-year grant from the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH). This renewal marks a significant milestone in strengthening research ethics capacity across East Africa.

MUREEP, established at MUST, gained recognition as the driving force behind East Africa’s first Master of Public Health program focusing specifically on Research Ethics (MPH-RE). Since its inception, the MPH-RE program has seen enrollment levels that surpass those of other MPH specializations in the region and has trained over 750 professionals through various non-degree courses.

The new funding will further empower the program to address emerging ethical challenges in research, including critical areas such as One Health, epidemics and pandemics, genomics, and cutting-edge technologies like big data, artificial intelligence, and gene therapy.

Under the leadership of Associate Professor Gertrude Kiwanuka and Dr. Francis Bajuniwe, MUREEP aims to expand research ethics mentorship both within MUST and to neighboring institutions. The program will also continue its fruitful partnership with Case Western Reserve University, enhancing its impact and reach.

“MUREEP’s renewal underscores a vital investment in ethical research practices not only for Uganda but for the entire East African region,” said Associate Professor Kiwanuka. “As research innovations evolve rapidly, strengthening ethical frameworks is crucial to protect communities and promote responsible scientific advancement.”
