In a major boost to Uganda’s grassroots health system, the Ministry of Health has officially passed out a new group of Community Health Extension Workers (CHEWs) in Kazo District.

The event was officiated by Permanent Secretary Dr. Diana Atwine, accompanied by area MP Hon. Dan Kimosho, the LC V Chairperson, and several district and ministry officials.

The newly trained CHEWs are expected to play a frontline role in health promotion, disease prevention, and early disease detection and referrals within their communities. The initiative is part of the Ministry of Health’s broader push to strengthen community-based healthcare and reduce the burden on health facilities by improving access to basic health services at the village level.

“These CHEWs are our new foot soldiers in the fight against preventable diseases,” said Dr. Atwine during her remarks. “They will be key in advancing Uganda’s primary healthcare goals, empowering communities to take charge of their health, and ensuring timely referrals to formal health centers.”

Each graduate was equipped with a bicycle, backpack, and a set of essential health tools to support their duties, which include: Household health education, Disease screening, Basic health monitoring and Referrals for treatment and follow-up.

Area MP Hon. Dan Kimosho praised the program, noting its potential to transform healthcare delivery in rural areas. “When we empower communities with knowledge and presence, we create a healthier and more resilient Uganda,” he stated.

The CHEW program is designed to bridge the gap between communities and formal health systems. It targets underserved and hard-to-reach areas where health workers are few and far between. Officials from the Ministry of Health affirmed that similar pass-out ceremonies are expected in other districts in the coming weeks.

District leaders and local stakeholders also committed to supporting the CHEWs with continuous training and operational resources to ensure the success of the initiative.

The pass-out event, held at the Kazo District Headquarters, was well attended and marked a celebratory milestone in the government’s ongoing commitment to universal health coverage and community-centered care.
