A devastating fire broke out in the early hours of Thursday morning at a family home in Bukasa, Kirinya, claiming six lives and leaving the community in shock.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police, the fire occurred around 3:00 AM at the residence of Ssekabila Fred, 45, a resident of the area. Neighbours reported hearing a loud blast before flames rapidly engulfed the house. Despite their efforts to intervene, the blaze had already taken full hold, making any rescue attempts nearly impossible.
Emergency services, including the Fire Prevention and Rescue team, responded promptly and managed to contain the fire, preventing it from spreading to nearby homes. A team of investigators later combed through the charred remains of the building.
Tragically, six bodies were recovered from the debris. The deceased were identified as: Ssekabila Fred (45) – Father; Gonja Winniefred – Mother; Nabuya Gloria (20); Nakakira Peace (16); Nakamya Helena (9) and Nebula Briyan (7).
The bodies have since been transported to City Mortuary, Mulago, for postmortem examinations.
While the precise cause of the fire remains under investigation, preliminary findings and testimonies from acquaintances suggest that Ssekabila may have been showing signs of suicidal behaviour before the incident. Police, however, emphasized that this theory is still under review and not yet conclusive.
In a statement, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Public Relations Officer of the Kampala Metropolitan Police, extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and the Bukasa community.
“We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss of life. Our investigations are ongoing, and we are committed to uncovering the full circumstances surrounding this incident,” ASP Owoyesigyire said.
Authorities have urged the public to remain calm and await verified information as they continue to probe the matter.
