The military court martial at Makindye has once again revealed its tyrannical face, unapologetically proving that Uganda’s justice system is nothing more than a glorified puppet show orchestrated by the corrupt regime of Yoweri Museveni. The case involving Dr. Kizza Besigye and his co-accused Hajj Obed Kamuregeya, which resumed today, turned into a spectacle of brutality, oppression, and a complete mockery of due process.
The court had initially promised a fair hearing after the Uganda Law Council surprisingly issued a temporary practicing license to Martha Wangari Karua, a fierce Kenyan politician and lawyer. Karua’s relentless pursuit of justice, even after her earlier application was rejected on flimsy grounds, symbolized hope for a legal system steeped in authoritarian filth. Yet, the events that unfolded in court today further highlighted the regime’s deep-seated fear of accountability and the lengths it will go to stifle dissent.
Eron Kiiza, a fiery and relentless defender of justice who has courageously stood by Besigye in the General Court Martial, became the latest victim of the state’s iron fist. His sudden arrest during court proceedings was a calculated move by the regime to weaken Besigye’s defense team and instill fear among other legal practitioners who dare to challenge its tyranny. That Kiiza was thrown into the dock alongside his clients shows the contempt the regime has for the rule of law. It’s no longer enough to silence political opponents; now, their legal defenders must also be crushed.
The arrest triggered chaos in the courtroom, leaving Besigye’s supporters, legal team, and even onlookers in utter shock. The court was adjourned for 30 minutes, not to ensure order but to allow the military to violently suppress any form of resistance. This is the reality of Museveni’s Uganda—where justice is not blind but rather gagged, shackled, and flogged in full view of the public.
Dr. Besigye, a symbol of resilience and opposition against this autocratic regime, has faced numerous fabricated charges over the years, each one more absurd than the last. The military court’s role is not to deliver justice but to serve as a tool of political persecution, weaponized to neutralize anyone who threatens the regime’s stranglehold on power. The addition of Kiiza to the list of accused persons only underscores the desperation of a dictatorship that fears the truth.
Meanwhile, the presence of Martha Karua in the courtroom serves as a reminder of the regime’s international embarrassment. Her involvement sheds light on the injustices occurring in Uganda and brings regional attention to the plight of its citizens. Yet, even her formidable presence couldn’t deter the regime from sinking further into the abyss of despotism.
Today’s events at the Makindye court martial are a stark reminder that Uganda under Museveni has no regard for justice, human rights, or even basic decency. The military’s audacious crackdown on lawyers, political opponents, and ordinary citizens sends a chilling message: dissent will not be tolerated, and those who dare to stand against the regime will face the full wrath of its machinery.
Museveni’s dictatorship will undoubtedly fall, but not without exposing the depths of its brutality. Uganda is bleeding, not just from corruption and mismanagement but from the systematic erosion of its democratic fabric. The question remains: how long will Ugandans endure this reign of terror?
