Ruzindana Augustine’s recent remarks on NBS TV’s NBS Morning Breeze only serve to confirm what many Ugandans have known for far too long: the political landscape in Uganda is nothing more than a staged performance orchestrated by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. The so-called “opposition” is but a mere illusion, a puppet show meant to distract the masses while Museveni tightens his suffocating grip on power.
For over thirty years, Museveni has proven to be a master of manipulation, a dictator who has perfected the art of keeping power by ensuring that the opposition remains divided, disorganised, and fundamentally weak. Ruzindana rightly points out that while Uganda boasts a supposedly large opposition, it is a fragmented, powerless force incapable of standing up to the entrenched tyranny of the NRM. However, this isn’t a testament to the competence of the ruling party but rather a glaring indictment of Museveni’s ability to create and exploit disarray.
The reality is that Museveni has spent decades systematically destroying any chance of a unified, effective opposition. It’s not incompetence that plagues the opposition—it is Museveni’s deliberate, insidious actions to keep it fractured and weak. Whether through bribing, co-opting, or outright eliminating political threats, the NRM has turned the opposition into a circus of fractured factions, each vying for relevance while Museveni watches from his imperial throne. The end result? A nation trapped in a political nightmare, where the masses are led to believe that they have a choice, when in reality, their options are as hollow as the promises of the ruling regime.
Ruzindana’s comments about the National Unity Platform (NUP) and figures like Mathias Mpuuga expose yet another facet of Uganda’s political farce. How can a party that claims to represent the will of the people fail to unite around a promising leader like Mpuuga? The answer lies in Museveni’s devious ability to sow discord even within the opposition. By ensuring that internal conflicts fester, Museveni ensures that the opposition spends its energy fighting amongst itself, rather than challenging his regime.
Perhaps the most tragic example of Museveni’s manipulation is the fall from grace of Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine. Once hailed as the hope of Uganda, Bobi Wine’s star has dimmed significantly. What was once seen as a movement of change has become another sad chapter in Uganda’s political theatre. Museveni’s strategy is simple: allow the opposition to grow just enough to give the illusion of democracy, then systematically tear it apart from within. This strategy has allowed Museveni to maintain his stranglehold on Uganda for far too long.
And then there’s Dr. Kizza Besigye, the perennial thorn in Museveni’s side. Besigye’s repeated arrests are nothing more than political theatre, a crude attempt by the regime to maintain the illusion of authority. If Besigye truly posed a threat, why isn’t he under constant surveillance? His arrests are nothing but a desperate attempt by Museveni to silence the one man who has consistently refused to bow to his tyranny. They are nothing more than a demonstration of how far Museveni is willing to go to retain his stranglehold on power.
Uganda’s political system is a sham. The nation is held hostage by a leader who has shown time and time again that he has no interest in democracy, no interest in the people, and no interest in anything other than preserving his power. The NRM’s stranglehold on power is not a triumph of governance—it is the epitome of a failed state, a nation held captive by a dictator who will stop at nothing to ensure his rule remains unchallenged.
Uganda is a country that could be so much more, yet it remains shackled by the iron fist of Museveni, a leader who has stolen the dreams of an entire generation. His regime is not a model of governance but a textbook example of how tyranny thrives when democracy is undermined at every turn. The opposition, disorganised and fractured, can do little more than watch as Museveni destroys the very essence of democracy, all while hiding behind a facade of elections and empty promises.
