Kiryandongo, Uganda – Joseline Atuhura, a prominent youth leader and humanitarian from Kiryandongo District, has declared her intention to run for Woman Member of Parliament (MP) in the 2026 general elections. Her announcement follows the decision of the incumbent Woman MP, Hon. Kahunde Helen, to step down after serving three terms.

Atuhura’s candidacy seeks to build on the achievements of her predecessor while addressing persistent challenges in the district. Despite her notable accomplishments, some critics have raised concerns about her age, questioning whether she has the experience to navigate the complex political landscape.

Background and Education

Born and raised in Kiryandongo, Atuhura’s leadership journey began early. She served as head girl at Kigumba High School before advancing to East High School in Ntinda for her Advanced Level education. She later earned a diploma in Business Administration and a degree in Commerce (Finance) from Makerere University Business School (MUBS). Currently, Atuhura is pursuing a Master’s Degree in Business Administration at Makerere University Kampala (MUK).

Humanitarian and Leadership Efforts

Atuhura has distinguished herself through her dedication to community service and youth empowerment. She is the founder of the Joseline Atuhura Foundation, a community-based organization focused on education, sports, skills development, and WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) programs. The foundation has empowered students with practical skills and resources, creating significant local impact.

Her humanitarian work has garnered international recognition, including awards from the United Nations for her contributions to community welfare and from the Afri-Exim Bank for her expertise in intra-African trade. As a USAID Youth Champion, she has advocated for improved sexual and reproductive health services, especially for young mothers and adolescents.

Responding to Criticism

Atuhura’s candidacy has not been without its detractors. Critics argue that her youth is a disadvantage, citing her perceived lack of experience for such a demanding political role. However, her achievements tell a different story.

In her role as secretary for female youth affairs in Kiryandongo District, Atuhura successfully implemented initiatives to enhance education, entrepreneurship, and the welfare of young women. She has consistently demonstrated her ability to mobilize resources and address pressing community issues effectively.

Atuhura’s supporters view her candidacy as a bold step toward inclusive leadership. Her campaign platform prioritizes education, healthcare, economic empowerment, and gender equality, aiming to drive meaningful change in Kiryandongo District.

Vision for the Future

If elected, Atuhura plans to focus on legislative reforms, equitable resource allocation, and policies that address her constituents’ needs. She also aims to uphold and expand the legacy of Hon. Kahunde Helen, whose tenure has shaped the district over the past three terms.

As the 2026 election season approaches, Atuhura’s announcement has sparked widespread interest, positioning her as a key contender in the race for Woman MP in Kiryandongo District. While skeptics question her readiness, her track record in leadership and community service suggests she is well-prepared for the challenge ahead.

Joseline Atuhura’s campaign embodies the potential of youthful leadership in shaping Uganda’s political landscape. Her vision for Kiryandongo District underscores her belief in the power of inclusive governance and community-driven development, making her a candidate to watch in the upcoming elections.
