In the Midst of Trials
Today, our pastor gave a message that pierced the heart, calling us to confront the struggles of our lives with a spirit of humility and repentance. Many are sinking into hopelessness, even despair, as they face overwhelming hardships. Yet, even in such dark times, God commands us to persevere, to turn our gaze upon Him. In this thanksgiving service, the pastor urged us not merely to express gratitude for our blessings but to recognize God’s unwavering love as our true sustenance. As the year draws to a close, let us deeply examine our hearts and ask ourselves—are we truly trusting in God’s strength, or have we fallen prey to despair, pride, or self-reliance?
1. Persevere Through the Darkness of Discouragement
Discouragement is a shadow that many of us know all too well. It steals into our hearts when we feel unseen, unappreciated, and weary from our efforts. How often do we begin with zeal, only to let the lack of results wear us down? In Galatians 6:9, we are urged, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Yet how many of us surrender to discouragement rather than clinging to this promise? Discouragement is a spiritual disease, seeping into our thoughts and telling us that our labors are futile. But God calls us to repent of this despair and find strength in His presence. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 reminds us to “encourage one another and build each other up.” Let us heed this call to support one another, to lift each other in faith, and to resist the voice of discouragement. This is God’s invitation to live in community, leaning on each other as we persevere in His strength.
2. Persevere Against the Poison of Pride
Pride is a barrier that can entangle us in self-deception, leading us to believe that we can endure life’s struggles on our own. Proverbs 16:18 offers a stern warning: “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” In times of difficulty, pride tempts us to rely on ourselves, assuming we have the strength to stand alone. But this pride is a lie that eventually leads us to collapse. Pride convinces us we don’t need God’s help, but when failure arrives, it turns to bitterness, resentment, and even despair. God calls us to humble ourselves and depend on Him alone, casting aside the self-reliance that our pride clings to. Repentance is the path to healing. In humility, we acknowledge that every step we take, every victory we achieve, is by His grace alone. This humility is our shield, enabling us to persevere with a heart surrendered to God’s strength, not our own.
3. Persevere by Resting in God Amidst Exhaustion
Exhaustion is a burden that crushes many of us, especially when we attempt to carry it alone. Serving others, particularly in ministry or caregiving roles, can drain us to the point of spiritual emptiness. But exhaustion is not God’s desire for us. Jesus set the example in Mark 1:35, withdrawing to pray and seeking renewal in the Father’s presence. Too often, we push ourselves to the edge, mistaking overwork for devotion and leaving no room for God’s peace to fill us. This relentless striving is a form of pride, as though we alone can bear all burdens. Jesus invites us to release this weight, saying in Matthew 11:28, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” In repentance, we must surrender our exhaustion, learning that true perseverance requires us to rest in God’s strength, not our own. Rest is not weakness; it is a divine gift that sustains us for the journey ahead. As we approach the end of the year, let us take this message as a solemn call to repentance and renewal. The faith of Nehemiah, who rebuilt Jerusalem despite opposition, the endurance of Caleb at 85, and the sacrificial perseverance of Christ on the cross—all these examples remind us that God is with us, guiding us through every trial. Today, we are faced with a choice: Will we lay down our pride, discouragement, and weariness before Him? Will we confess our self-reliance and embrace the strength that only God can provide? As we recommit ourselves to God, may we find the strength to persevere, knowing that in due time, He will bring for
