Kampala — Uganda’s political landscape is intensifying as reports suggest that Mr. David Lewis Rubongoya, Secretary General of the National Unity Platform (NUP), and his close associate Mr. Spartan Mukagyi, may be key figures behind the newly formed People Power Front (PPF). Sources indicate the two recently held a confidential meeting to finalize PPF’s strategic plans, stirring fresh controversy.
Although PPF was initially believed to be the creation of Mukagyi, insiders now claim that Rubongoya has been the driving force behind its formation. The emergence of PPF is seen as a contingency plan to protect NUP, as the party faces escalating challenges, particularly legal disputes initiated by the Kibalama faction. This faction has long contested NUP’s leadership and has pursued legal actions to challenge its legitimacy.
The persistent challenge from the Kibalama faction has put NUP on the defensive, and as the saying goes, “necessity is the mother of invention.” The formation of PPF appears to be a strategic move to safeguard the principles of the People Power movement, which some argue have been diluted since NUP’s establishment in 2021.
Adding to the intrigue, Musa Misango, PPF’s chairman, hinted at more significant revelations to come during the upcoming People Power Reunion on November 23rd. This event will bring together former and current People Power members to discuss the future of Uganda’s opposition. Misango also suggested that additional prominent figures involved with PPF are yet to be disclosed.
Rumors continue to swirl around Rubongoya’s involvement in PPF, particularly as more details surface. Initially, there was speculation that Hon. Mathias Mpuuga was leading the group, but he has since denied these claims. With Rubongoya now at the center of attention, questions are arising as to whether NUP leader Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) is aware of these developments, or if he risks losing influence over this new direction.
As tensions build, the coming weeks are likely to reveal whether PPF will act as a safeguard for the People Power movement or if it will introduce a new wave of challenges for NUP’s core. Time will tell if NUP’s leadership can withstand this unfolding political tempest.
