The disgusting revelation that the Uganda Joint Christian Council (UJCC) defrauded President Museveni in the shamelessly failed Shs 2.5 billion project is an explosive testament to the rot at the heart of Uganda’s religious leadership and government. What’s even worse than this disgraceful debacle is the fact that it shows how far both the so-called clergy and Museveni will go to fill their pockets at the expense of the very people they claim to serve. Men of God, these hypocrites, have chosen the path of deceit and greed, betraying every ounce of trust placed in them by the Ugandan public. They are nothing but wolves in sheep’s clothing, exploiting both their positions of faith and political access for personal gain.
Rev Fr. Constantine Mbonabingi and Rev Fr. Daniel Musiitwa, both high-ranking officials in UJCC, epitomize this disgraceful alliance between corrupt religious leaders and Museveni’s crooked regime. These so-called spiritual leaders orchestrated a brazen con to defraud the president and the Ugandan people, pocketing Shs 300 million in a fake “peace project.” This is a disgrace of epic proportions, proving that these clerics are just as despicable and morally bankrupt as the politicians they work with. Their actions have stained the sanctity of the church, revealing them as nothing more than gluttonous charlatans masquerading as men of faith.
But this scandal isn’t just about the clergy’s greed—it’s about the festering corruption that permeates Museveni’s regime. The speed with which Shs 300 million was thrown at this sham project by Museveni’s State House is not only reckless but criminal. Museveni’s government has long been a cesspool of corruption, where oversight and accountability are afterthoughts. The truth is, Museveni himself has been knee-deep in these dirty dealings for decades. He has used religious leaders as pawns to prop up his dying regime, offering them money and favors in exchange for loyalty. This scandal only confirms what everyone knows—Museveni’s so-called “anti-corruption” rhetoric is a farce. He surrounds himself with thieves and conmen, and now even the church has been sucked into his web of deceit.
It’s no coincidence that key members of the UJCC, like Bishop Anthony Zziwa, were kept in the dark. These corrupt clerics, Mbonabingi and Musiitwa, deliberately sidestepped any oversight, creating a secret bank account to facilitate their shameless embezzlement. They’ve turned the UJCC into a mafia, where donors’ money is siphoned off to fund their extravagant lifestyles, while church workers go unpaid, and Uganda’s most vulnerable are left to suffer. The fact that the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) is suing UJCC for failing to remit Shs 216 million in staff benefits just adds another layer to this putrid cesspool of corruption.
And Museveni? He is just as complicit. The man who claims to fight corruption is a kingpin of it. His regime allows such daylight robbery to happen without consequence. His cozy relationship with corrupt religious leaders is nothing more than a convenient alliance of crooks. Together, they have bled Uganda dry, leaving the country in ruins while they feast on ill-gotten wealth. It’s time to call this what it is—a criminal conspiracy between church and state, built on the backs of the suffering Ugandan people.
