Under the ruthless tyranny of Yoweri Museveni, Uganda has been plunged into a suffocating information blackout. The government’s deliberate sabotage of free-to-air television channels is not just a gross violation of the public’s right to information; it is a calculated assault on the very fabric of Ugandan society. This regime, festering with corruption and fueled by greed, has once again shown its utter contempt for the people it pretends to govern.

The digital migration of 2015, hailed as a step forward, has turned into a grotesque mockery of progress. Signet, the Uganda Broadcasting Corporation’s (UBC) subsidiary, was entrusted with distributing free-to-air signals across the nation. Yet today, even the few districts that once had access to these signals are left with nothing but the stale, mind-numbing drivel of the state-controlled UBC channel. This isn’t a simple failure; it is a deliberate act of suppression, designed to strangle the flow of free information and force Ugandans into the jaws of pay-TV behemoths like DStv and StarTimes.

Museveni’s regime, driven by an insatiable lust for power and money, has shamelessly allowed these private companies to monopolize the airwaves. It’s clear that secretive, dirty deals have been struck, with Museveni himself undoubtedly pocketing the spoils. This sickening collusion leaves Ugandans no choice but to cough up outrageous fees for the basic right to access information—a right that Museveni has sold to the highest bidder.

Museveni’s vile betrayal of Uganda is made even more bitter by the fact that this country embraced him when he fled Rwanda. Yet, his gratitude has been nothing but poison. He has repaid Uganda’s generosity with treachery, tearing apart the very nation that gave him refuge. His ruthless policies and relentless corruption are not just destroying Uganda’s media; they are tearing down the country, piece by piece.

The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), instead of defending the public’s right to free information, has become a pathetic puppet, dancing to the strings pulled by a corrupt and despotic regime. Their failure to hold Signet accountable, and their complicity in this blackout, is a disgrace to the very notion of public service.

Ugandans must rise and break the chains of this oppressive regime. Museveni’s stranglehold on media and information must be shattered. The people of Uganda deserve to know the truth. It is time to expose and dismantle Museveni’s regime for the corrupt, tyrannical force it is. Enough is enough; Uganda must reclaim its right to free and fair information, and cast off the yoke of Museveni’s ruinous rule.
