The Ugandan legal and political landscape is shrouded in grief with the passing of Kiddu Makubuya, a man whose life was a testament to resilience, dedication, and profound intellect. Born on July 30, 1949, Makubuya’s journey was one of unparalleled service, shaping the legal frameworks and policies that continue to guide Uganda. Yet, it is his departure that now casts a long shadow, leaving the nation to grapple with the loss of one of its most revered sons.

Kiddu Makubuya was not just a lawyer or a politician; he was a symbol of a bygone era, one where the weight of responsibility was met with unwavering commitment. His role in the drafting of the 1995 Constitution of Uganda cemented his place in history, reflecting his deep understanding of justice and governance. As Attorney General and later as Minister for General Duties, Makubuya navigated the turbulent waters of Ugandan politics with a steady hand, despite the controversies that clouded his later years.

His daughter, Rebecca Nabagala, had only recently dispelled rumors of his death, assuring the public that her father was receiving treatment at Nakasero Hospital. The news of his passing, therefore, strikes with an unexpected cruelty, as if the nation had been given a false reprieve, only to be plunged back into sorrow. The anticipation of his recovery was a thread of hope that has now frayed, leaving nothing but an overwhelming sense of loss.

Makubuya’s life was a tapestry of achievements, woven with threads of legal brilliance and public service. His academic prowess, earning a First Class Honors Bachelor of Laws from Makerere University and furthering his studies at Yale Law School, was a beacon of inspiration. Yet, beyond the accolades and positions held, Makubuya was a man who deeply impacted those who crossed his path.

His resignation in 2012 amid allegations of misappropriation may have dimmed his political star, but it never extinguished the respect he commanded as a legal scholar and a public servant. Today, as Uganda prepares to lay him to rest, the void left by his departure is felt not only by his family and friends but by a nation that will forever remember his contributions.

As the burial preparations continue, Uganda mourns the end of an era. The tears shed in this moment are not just for a man who has passed but for the irreplaceable legacy that Kiddu Makubuya leaves behind. His memory will live on in the annals of Ugandan history, a testament to a life lived in the service of others.
