In a flagrant display of authoritarianism, the Uganda Police Force has once again exposed its utter disdain for democratic values and civil liberties by halting the National Unity Platform (NUP)’s countrywide tour led by Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, commonly known as Bobi Wine. This latest act, steeped in hypocrisy and brutishness, epitomizes the police’s relentless crusade to crush dissent and suppress political opposition under the guise of maintaining public order.
The police have fabricated a ludicrous list of seven so-called infractions to justify their draconian suspension of NUP’s mobilization efforts. According to Frank Mwesigwa, the police director of operations, these alleged violations range from trivial traffic offenses to absurd claims of disorderly conduct. This smokescreen of accusations is nothing more than a flimsy cover for their underlying agenda of repression and control.
Among the laughable charges is the claim that NUP vehicles carried passengers on rooftops or caused minor traffic disruptions during processions. Such trivial issues are commonplace in any large public demonstration, yet the police have seized on them as a pretext to dismantle a crucial democratic engagement. Their selective enforcement and inflated justifications reveal their contempt for genuine political activity and their eagerness to crush it at any cost.
Mwesigwa’s list of supposed violations reads like a farce. The claim that a vehicle “dancing while driving” constitutes a major traffic violation is not only ridiculous but also exposes the police’s desperation to invent reasons to hinder NUP’s activities. This is not law enforcement but an absurd exercise in bureaucratic overreach.
Moreover, the police’s obsession with these trivial matters starkly contrasts with their glaring negligence of more serious issues. While they meticulously monitor and penalize every minor misstep by NUP, they conveniently ignore the rampant corruption and systemic abuse within their own ranks. The irony is staggering: an institution notorious for its own misconduct is now using flimsy pretexts to undermine legitimate political opposition.
The timing of this suspension is highly suspect. It conveniently coincides with NUP’s strategic expansion into critical districts. This move appears to be a calculated effort to sabotage NUP’s momentum and undermine its influence in key areas. The pattern of suspending tours, imposing severe restrictions, and stifling political engagement reveals a deliberate strategy to suppress opposition and entrench the current regime’s grip on power.
Bobi Wine’s response to the suspension is both poignant and warranted. His accusation that the police are “always looking for any excuse to block us” exposes a broader truth about the systematic repression under the current regime. By denouncing the suspension as “madness,” Bobi Wine highlights the absurdity of the police’s actions and challenges their authoritarian practices head-on.
The suspension of NUP’s tour is a glaring example of using law enforcement as a tool of political oppression. The police force is not merely enforcing the law but is actively serving a regime that seeks to silence any form of dissent. This approach undermines democratic principles and erodes public trust in law enforcement agencies that should be serving the interests of the people.
