In a despicable display of unchecked authoritarianism, the Ugandan government unleashed its sadistic police force to savagely crush a peaceful political gathering in Kasokoso, Kireka. Kira Municipality Legislator Ibrahim Ssemuju Nganda, alongside other politicians including Nakawa East Legislator Balimwezo, was addressing residents about the impending demolition of 500 houses by the notorious National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).
NEMA, infamous for its ruthless and tyrannical measures against alleged “wetland encroachers,” had marked these houses for destruction, throwing hundreds of families into turmoil. Rather than addressing the legitimate concerns of its citizens, the government opted for its usual tactic of brutal suppression.
Ssemuju’s rally was violently terminated when police thugs, acting as the regime’s merciless enforcers, arrested him and forcibly dispersed the attendees. The thuggery didn’t stop there; the police targeted journalists too, hurling tear gas to ensure no one documented their barbaric actions.
This incident lays bare the government’s utter contempt for democratic principles and human rights. Their fear of dissent drives them to respond with vicious intimidation and violence. The arrest of Ssemuju and the brutalization of journalists underline the regime’s desperation to maintain its tyrannical grip on power through fear and oppression.
Ugandans must awaken to the grim reality of their government’s tyranny. The vicious suppression of Ssemuju’s peaceful rally is not just an attack on one politician but a direct assault on the very core of democracy and freedom of speech in the country. The regime’s barbarism knows no bounds, and it is high time the world takes notice of its egregious human rights abuses.
