The arrest and detention of 36 Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party members, including Innocent Museveni Rubarondesa, starkly exemplify the government’s tyrannical repression. Accused of terrorism and treason, these individuals were shamelessly paraded before the media and charged with heinous crimes, exposing the regime’s vile tactics to suppress dissent and obliterate political opposition.

This grotesque spectacle, marked by blatant violations of Ugandan and international law, underscores the regime’s desperation to crush any form of opposition. The baseless terrorism and treason charges against these individuals—who were purportedly attending a leadership workshop in Kenya—reveal a sinister ploy to vilify and intimidate the opposition. These charges are a cynical diversion from the regime’s own failures and brutal attempts to suppress legitimate political activities.

The events surrounding their deportation from Kenya and subsequent violent arrest in Luzira Prison reveal a disturbing complicity between the Ugandan government and Kenyan authorities in this farcical display of state violence. The reports of torture and the confiscation of personal property during their arrest highlight a grotesque disregard for human rights.

Dr. Kizza Besigye’s claim that the group was lawfully invited and cleared for their activities directly contradicts the government’s narrative. The incoherence in official statements and the hurried prosecution reflect a blatant attempt by the regime to manipulate the narrative and deflect attention from its own catastrophic failures. The public spectacle of the accused and their denial of a fair legal process highlight the regime’s use of the judiciary as an instrument of political persecution.

The reckless use of terrorism charges—a capital offense punishable by death—against political opponents reveals a calculated strategy to instill terror and solidify power. This brazen abuse of the justice system exposes the government’s deep-seated contempt for democratic values and its willingness to resort to draconian measures to maintain its despotic grip on power.
