In a brazen display of authoritarianism, President Museveni and his security forces have once again shown their utter contempt for democracy and the rule of law. The recent arrest and remand of Hon. Zaake and other National Unity Platform (NUP) leaders to Luzira Prison is not just a violation of their rights but a glaring testament to Museveni’s relentless and ruthless oppression. This calculated move to stifle dissent under the pretext of maintaining order exposes the regime’s true nature: a brutal dictatorship masquerading as a government.
On Monday, Mityana Municipality MP Hon. Zaake, along with several NUP officials, was violently dragged from the party’s headquarters in Kavule, Kampala. Their crime? Attempting to address a press conference. The police, notorious for their heavy-handed thuggery, claimed that NUP was mobilizing Ugandans for an anti-corruption march to Parliament—a right enshrined in our constitution. This blatant suppression of free speech and peaceful assembly reveals a regime in sheer panic, desperate to cling to power by any means necessary, even if it means trampling on basic human rights.
The state’s response was as predictable as it was pathetic. Instead of engaging with the legitimate concerns raised by NUP about rampant corruption, the regime resorted to its usual tactics of intimidation and incarceration. NUP’s Secretary General, Lewis Rubongoya, lamented that their efforts to secure bail were thwarted by the state’s flimsy excuses, with Hon. Zaake being absurdly charged with a traffic offense while his comrades faced charges of unlawful assembly. This farcical misuse of the criminal justice system to silence political opponents is emblematic of Museveni’s despotic rule.
Police Spokesperson ACP Kituuma Rusoke’s justification for the arrests was nothing short of laughable. His claim that the police were trying to dissuade the organizers from a “potentially anarchic approach” reeks of hypocrisy and absurdity. It is not the peaceful protesters but the police and security forces that routinely resort to violence and chaos. The police’s declaration of the demo as ‘illegal’ and threats of serious legal ramifications are clear indicators of a regime that is terrified of the power of the people.
The youth of Uganda, disillusioned by the pervasive corruption that has crippled public service delivery, have every right to protest. Yet, Museveni, in a desperate attempt to maintain his stranglehold on power, has chosen to demonize these brave individuals as agents of chaos. His recent address to the nation, where he accused opposition figures of collaborating with foreigners to incite riots, is a pathetic attempt to deflect attention from his own failures. Museveni’s rhetoric about taking further measures if these actions continue is a thinly veiled threat aimed at crushing any semblance of dissent.
It is beyond infuriating that Museveni, who has presided over a regime marked by corruption, human rights abuses, and economic mismanagement, dares to lecture Ugandans about fairness and consideration. His regime has systematically undermined democratic institutions, eroded the judiciary’s independence, and weaponized the security apparatus to perpetuate his rule. The recent arrests are just the latest in a long line of repressive tactics aimed at quashing any opposition to his tyrannical regime.
Rubongoya’s assertion that the jailed activists are “all very strong” is a testament to the resilience and courage of those who dare to stand up against Museveni’s brutality. However, this strength should not be a requirement for basic human rights and democratic freedoms. The international community must recognize that Museveni’s regime is not just a political problem for Uganda but a stain on humanity. It is incumbent upon global leaders to condemn these atrocities and take decisive action against this despotic regime.
Museveni’s insidious use of the criminal justice system to persecute political opponents is a clear indicator of his desperation. His regime, teetering on the brink of illegitimacy, resorts to violence and repression to maintain a facade of control. The Ugandan people, however, are not fooled. They see through the lies and the brutality, and their resolve to fight for justice and democracy remains unshaken.
Museveni’s government is nothing more than a gangster regime, a cabal of thugs and opportunists clinging to power through fear and intimidation. His disgraceful tactics and the cowardice of his henchmen have exposed the regime for what it truly is: a cheap, vile, and ruthless dictatorship that has no place in the modern world.
