The passing of Mathew Bukenya, the former long-serving Executive Secretary of the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB), marks the end of an era in Uganda’s education sector. News of his death, shared by UNEB and its spokesperson Jenifer Kalule, has left many mourning the loss of a man who dedicated a significant portion of his life to ensuring the integrity and efficiency of the country’s examination processes. Bukenya, who was in his early 90s, leaves behind a legacy that will be remembered for generations.

Mathew Bukenya’s career with UNEB began long before he was appointed as Executive Secretary. He initially joined the examinations body as an accountant, bringing with him a keen eye for detail and a strong sense of duty. In 1995, he was called out of retirement to take on the mantle of Executive Secretary, a position he held with distinction until his eventual retirement. His appointment came at a time when UNEB was facing significant challenges, including widespread examination malpractice. His predecessor, David Livingstone Ongom, had been dismissed amidst these controversies, leaving Bukenya with the daunting task of restoring faith in the examinations system.

Bukenya’s leadership style was marked by a no-nonsense approach to tackling examination malpractice. His unwavering commitment to upholding the integrity of the examination process earned him the respect of colleagues, educators, and students alike. Under his stewardship, UNEB implemented stringent measures to curb cheating and other malpractices, ensuring that the results reflected the true abilities of the students. His tenure saw a significant reduction in the incidences of malpractice, restoring confidence in the national examinations.

One of Bukenya’s notable achievements was the introduction of modern technologies in the administration of examinations. He championed the use of secure systems for printing and distributing examination papers, reducing the risk of leaks and other forms of misconduct. His forward-thinking approach ensured that UNEB stayed ahead of potential threats, maintaining the credibility of the examinations.

Beyond his administrative duties, Mathew Bukenya was a mentor to many within UNEB and the broader education sector. His willingness to share his wealth of knowledge and experience helped groom a new generation of education administrators. Daniel Nokrach Odongo, who succeeded Bukenya as Executive Secretary, was one of the many who benefited from his mentorship. Odongo, who served as Bukenya’s deputy, has often spoken of the invaluable lessons he learned under Bukenya’s guidance.

Bukenya’s vision for UNEB extended beyond his tenure. He laid the groundwork for several initiatives that have continued to benefit the education sector. His emphasis on transparency and accountability in the examinations process has had a lasting impact, influencing policies and practices long after his retirement.

Mathew Bukenya’s contributions to education were not confined to his role at UNEB. He was actively involved in various educational initiatives, always seeking ways to improve the quality of education in Uganda. His passion for education was evident in his involvement with numerous educational boards and committees, where he advocated for policies that would benefit students and educators alike.

His dedication to education was recognized through various awards and accolades. However, Bukenya remained humble, always attributing his success to the collective efforts of his colleagues and the support of his family. His humility and dedication to service have left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of working with him.

As we mourn the passing of Mathew Bukenya, it is important to celebrate the remarkable life he led. His contributions to Uganda’s education sector have left a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations. Bukenya’s story is one of dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

In remembering Mathew Bukenya, we not only honour a man who dedicated his life to improving education in Uganda, but we also reflect on the values he embodied. His legacy is a testament to the difference one individual can make through dedication and a commitment to serving others.

Mathew Bukenya’s death is a significant loss for Uganda. However, his legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched through his work. His story serves as an inspiration, reminding us of the importance of integrity, dedication, and service. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. May his soul rest in peace, and may his legacy continue to guide and inspire us.
