Every time I get a call, I tell the caller “Let me shut off the background noise”. Then I mute the TV or Radio or both.

Now, last week, I was talking to one of my friends in Kampala. He said “Let me shut off the background noise”. Problem is I was not hearing TV in the background. So, I asked him what noise he was meaning.

HIM: My 6yr old likes reading and is reading her book out loud.

MLN: Please don’t shut off that noise. It is good for kids to read out loud. Actually even many adult Ugandans.

Ask a Ugandan to pronounce COUP (in like Coup d’Etat).

Remember I am also a parent. I used to make my kids read out their writing aloud. This way, I didn’t have to proof their work. And often, they would catch their mistakes and correct their writing.
