The Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has called upon security forces to protect National Housing and Population Census officials after an enumerator was killed in Najjera, Wakiso district.
According to his colleagues, Andrew Ssali, an enumerator assigned to the Najjera enumeration area, was hit with a sharp object in the head on his way back home yesterday.
He was rushed to the hospital but shortly passed away.
Speaker Among condoled with the family of Ssali for their loss.
She urged security forces to enhance protection for the officials to ensure a smooth exercise.
Among spoke after she and her husband, Hon Moses Magogo, were enumerated by Uganda Bureau of Statistics officials led by Executive Director, Dr Chris Mukiza.
Prior to the enumeration exercise, Dr Mukiza had promised security to enumerators and their supervisors saying they would be guided by Local Council officials and be protected by police.
The Internal Security Organisation (ISO) also pledged to protect officials and secure the exercise.
Planning, said Speaker Among, is a scientific function, and this census will allow authorities to budget appropriately and with exactness.
She called on Ugandans to embrace the activity and urged UBOS officials to speed up the process and have as wide coverage as possible for accuracy.
