In an explosive tirade that has left Ugandans reeling and demanding answers, veteran journalist and political firebrand Andrew Mwenda has unleashed a scathing critique of the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Among. Mwenda, never one to mince words, accused Among of siphoning off public funds that should have been used for vital services like healthcare and education, all while hypocritically denouncing homosexuality.

In an impassioned speech, Mwenda lambasted the Speaker for her double standards. “Speaker Among has no moral authority to condemn homosexuality,” he thundered. “Her actions cause far greater harm to Uganda. While she lines her pockets, our children go without education, our sick go untreated, and our roads remain in disrepair. And yet, she has the audacity to point fingers at the LGBTQ+ community. It’s a classic case of the pot calling the kettle black.”

Mwenda’s accusations didn’t stop at moral failings. He provided detailed allegations of financial misconduct, claiming that money was funneled directly from the Bank of Uganda into parliamentary accounts, ultimately landing in the personal accounts of Among’s bodyguard, driver, and personal assistant at Stanbic Bank. “I have the bank statements,” Mwenda declared, holding up papers as if presenting the final nail in Among’s political coffin. “This isn’t just hearsay—this is hard evidence.”

In true Mwenda fashion, he didn’t just drop the bombshell and walk away. He challenged the Speaker to come forward publicly and account for every shilling. “If she has nothing to hide, she should open up those bank accounts for public scrutiny,” he said. “But we all know that won’t happen, because those accounts are swimming in stolen cash.”

The timing of Mwenda’s revelations couldn’t be more damning. It comes hot on the heels of the UK imposing sanctions on several Ugandan politicians, including Among, for corruption. The international community’s patience with Uganda’s kleptocratic tendencies is wearing thin, and these sanctions are a stark reminder that the world is watching.

Public sentiment in Uganda is also boiling over. Citizens are increasingly vocal about the need for accountability and transparency in the handling of public funds. The call for the Speaker to uphold the principles of good governance is not just a murmur—it’s a roar. People are fed up with the blatant misuse of taxpayers’ money, and Mwenda’s expose has only fanned the flames of their indignation.

Adding to the drama, Hon. Ssekikubo has been a persistent thorn in the Speaker’s side, repeatedly raising the issue of public funds being squandered. He has long called for a parliamentary debate on how commissioners awarded themselves a cool Shs1.7 billion—a move he rightly deems outrageous. Yet, every time he brings it up, Among dismisses it as “nonsense.” One has to wonder what other pressing issues she deems unworthy of discussion. World hunger? Climate change? Perhaps she’ll only engage if it involves finding new ways to pad her already bulging pockets.

Mwenda’s blistering critique has left Ugandans with more questions than answers. How did Among manage to divert such large sums of money without detection? What other secrets is she hiding behind that polished veneer? And, most importantly, why is she still in office?

The irony of Among’s position is not lost on the public. As Speaker of Parliament, she is supposed to be a paragon of virtue, the custodian of democracy, and a champion of the people’s interests. Instead, she has become a symbol of everything wrong with Ugandan politics—corruption, hypocrisy, and a total disregard for the public good.

Mwenda’s call for accountability is not just about Anita Among. It’s a rallying cry for all Ugandans to demand better from their leaders. The time for passive acceptance is over. As Mwenda so eloquently put it, “We cannot allow our country to be run by thieves masquerading as moral crusaders. It’s time to clean house.”

In a country where politicians often escape unscathed from scandal after scandal, Mwenda’s bold accusations are a breath of fresh air. But will they lead to real change, or will they be just another flash in the pan? Only time will tell.

As the dust settles from Mwenda’s bombshell, the public is left with a bitter taste. The revelations have sparked outrage, disbelief, and a burning desire for justice. People are demanding that Among step down and face the consequences of her actions. They are calling for a thorough investigation into the alleged theft of public funds and the implementation of stricter controls to prevent future abuses.

It’s a critical moment for Uganda. The country stands at a crossroads, and the path it chooses now will determine its future. Will it continue to be a haven for corrupt officials, or will it rise to the challenge and demand integrity, transparency, and accountability from its leaders?

Mwenda’s fearless denunciation has set the stage for what could be a significant political upheaval. The international community is watching, the public is mobilized, and the pressure is mounting on Speaker Among. The ball is now in her court. Will she come clean and face the music, or will she continue to hide behind a facade of false righteousness?

One thing is clear: Uganda deserves better. And thanks to Andrew Mwenda, the fight for a just and accountable government is far from over.
