Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT |  Uganda Insurers Association (UIA) held a consultative stakeholder workshop on the draft guidelines on the computation of Workers’ Compensation in partnership with the Ministry of Gender, Labour & Social Development.

The workshop which featured Labour Officers from the Western Region took place at Acacia Hotel in Mbarara last week.

The benefit of having workers’ compensation insurance only protects a company by removing the ability of employees to sue the company for negligence in the workplace environment.

Your employee is compensated, avoiding potentially lengthy legal proceedings. Engagement in workers’ compensation is critical in raising awareness of the benefits of the insurance and fills the gap in the policy design and uptake.

Assistant Commissioner of Industrial Relations at the Ministry of Gender, Labour & Social Development – Apollo Onzoma opened the workshop by emphasizing that Labour Officers drive the Workers Compensation Act’s impact on Ugandans.

He applauded UIA for rendering support in drafting the Workers Compensation Computation Guidelines.

Ministry of Gender, Labour & Social Development’s Labour Support Officer – Martha Irankunda took the Labour Officers through the assessment & computation of workers’ compensation as indicated in the Workers Compensation Act.

Non-Life Technical Assistant – Gilbert Emojong who represented UIA at the meeting thanked the Ministry of Gender Labour & Social Development for its proactive efforts towards drafting the Workers Compensation Computation Guidelines.

Vice Chairperson of the Uganda Labour Association – Nyanzi Kizito also lauded the Ministry of Gender, Labour & Social Development for their commitment to elevating the visibility of labour officials in public service.
Gilbert pledged UIA’s continued support & cooperation with all stakeholders to promote insurance whilst safeguarding the consumers’ best interests.
