ROME, ITALY | Xinhua | Italian media reported on Tuesday that U.S. electric vehicle maker Tesla is in discussions with the Italian government to establish a production facility in the country.
According to reports, Tesla has been in talks with the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy for several months, with a plan to manufacture electric trucks and vans in southern Italy.
Sources revealed that Tesla officials have already begun assessing potential sites for the production facility.
The contact between Tesla and the Italian government coincides with Rome’s efforts to engage multiple automakers to bolster its car production.
Earlier this year, Adolfo Urso, the Minister of Enterprises, emphasized the need for Italy to increase its national car production to 1.3 million vehicles annually, up from below 800,000 in 2023, to safeguard its domestic auto industry amid the challenges posed by the transition to electric mobility.
Media reports also suggested that Italy is holding discussions with three Chinese vehicle manufacturers: BYD, Great Wall Motors, and Chery Automobile.
