March 9, 2024 (NEW YORK) -Russia called on Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to prioritize national unity over personal interests and work towards peace.
This comes amidst discussions at the UN Security Council on Thursday regarding the dire humanitarian situation in Sudan and the need for a ceasefire, particularly during Ramadan.
During the Security Council meeting, Russia’s Deputy Permanent Representative, Anna Evstigneeva, acknowledged the Sudanese government’s willingness to find solutions. She suggested this could be “a starting point for a comprehensive settlement.”
Evstigneeva then urged “the other party involved,” implying the RSF leadership, to “embrace compromise and prioritize Sudan’s national interests over personal aspirations.” This marks a shift from Russia’s previous neutral stance, as they abstained from voting in favor of the Ramadan truce resolution on Friday.
While acknowledging the humanitarian concerns, Evstigneeva argued that reducing cooperation with Sudanese authorities would be counterproductive. She highlighted Sudan’s recent move to reopen border crossings for humanitarian aid as a positive step.
Russia emphasized the need for constructive support for Sudan, suggesting “sound advice and useful recommendations” instead of criticism. They believe the UN Special Envoy can play a key role by unifying mediation efforts and learning from the “negative experience” of the defunct UN mission in Sudan (UNITAMS).
The statement also called for proactive engagement from regional bodies like the African Union and IGAD, while emphasizing respect for Sudan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
