Luwero, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The National Resistance Movement (NRM) village and sub-county registrars in Luwero district have received a stern warning against accepting bribes and political interference during the party register update exercise commencing today. The NRM Party will start the display and update of the party register nationwide from Wednesday, March 13th, to Sunday, March 17th, 2024.
The delivery of materials for the exercise, including the yellow books, has been completed in the districts. Ronald Ndawula, the Luwero District NRM chairperson handed over materials to 18 sub-county registrars on Monday after completing training for the exercise.
Today, 624 NRM Village registrars will receive materials and undergo training before the exercise begins tomorrow. David Kamugisha, the Luwero District NRM Registrar, affirmed readiness for the exercise but cautioned registrars against accepting bribes and aligning with the interests of politicians instead of adhering to party guidelines during register updates.
He warned against the possibility of politicians attempting to manipulate registrars to register individuals from other areas or non-members into the NRM register to influence specific candidates in primaries or for potential misuse of party cards in the future.
Kamugisha emphasized the importance of registrars following the guidelines and guidance of National Party Chairman Yoweri Museveni during the register updates.
Ronald Ndawula, the Luwero NRM District Chairman, highlighted that a flawed register can lead to vote rigging and conflicts, underscoring the need for vigilance among registrars during the update process.
In consultations with LC 1 Chairmen, Doreen Eyoku, the Kikyusa town council registrar, stated that they aim to conduct a free and fair exercise to prevent irregularities by ensuring that any new member registered within a specific village adheres to proper procedures.
Daudi Migereko, the Greater Luwero Zonal Coordinator for the Update Exercise, stressed the importance for supporters to ensure their names are captured in the register accurately as per their National IDs to avoid conflicts during grassroots elections or primaries.
NRM leaders in Luwero expressed optimism that a well-conducted exercise would rejuvenate the party’s presence in the area after experiencing defeat in the 2021 elections. During the 2021 general elections, President Yoweri Museveni experienced a significant drop in popularity in the district, securing only 41,166 votes (27.94%) while his rival NUP Presidential candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu, garnered 103,782 votes (70.45%).
