Mbarara, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Two football players, competing in the Kitunga League and students of Bishop Stuart University, tragically lost their lives in a morning accident along the Mbarara Lyantode road.

The deceased have been identified as Asuman Kilabala, also known as Kibazo, of Potts Football Club and a resident of Kabwohe, Sheema District, and Ashiru Agaba of Kanyampumo, Kajara, and a player for Kahonda Football Club. Both teams participate in the Kitunga League.

The Kitunga League was initiated by alumni of Muntuyera High School Kitunga in Ntungamo District.

The accident occurred on Sunday morning at Akyapa along the Mbarara Lyantonde road, involving two vehicles: a silver Toyota Spacio with registration number UBC 554D, whose driver remains unidentified, and a white Tata lorry with registration number UBH 961W driven by Gessa Abaala Abdala, a 41-year-old resident of Gaba Bukunja in Buikwe District.

It is alleged that the driver of the Toyota Spacio, traveling from Mbarara towards Kampala, lost control of the vehicle due to overspeeding, veered from his lane, and collided with the Tata Lorry coming from the opposite direction.

Marvin Orishaba, an eyewitness, claims that the driver of the Toyota Spacio was speeding while negotiating a corner, resulting in him crossing into the wrong side of the road.

Samson Kasasira, the Rwizi Region police spokesperson, stated that two occupants of the Toyota Spacio died instantly, while two others sustained severe injuries.

Davies Mishare, the coordinator of the Kitunga League, mentioned that the two players were scheduled to participate in today’s matches between Potts FC and Kyasha FC, and Kahonda FC against Omuti FC. He further announced the postponement of today’s games to allow for the burial of the two players.

Kasasira reported that the bodies were transported to Kasambya Mortuary in Lyantonde District for postmortem examination, while the injured victims were rushed to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital in critical condition for treatment by good Samaritans.

Efforts to identify the victims are ongoing, while the vehicles involved in the accident have been towed and parked at Sanga Police Station, awaiting examination by the Inspector of Vehicles.
