State Minister for Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang, has confirmed the Akii Bua Stadium in Lira is poised for reconstruction.
Akii Bua Stadium, the home of Lango Province, was earlier selected as one of the facilities to be used for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations when East Africa won the joint Pamoja bid. Reports indicated it was underlooked, raising eyebrows among football circles.
Minister Ogwang took to his X-Platform to disclose the plans to have the facility constructed and that it will take 22 months for its conclusion.
“Plans to construct Aki Bua Stadium in Lira City have been finalised, after we signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Joint Venture of Khator Sports and SAMCO to construct the stadium in less than 20 months.” Minister Ogwang posted on X.
He further opened up… “The Contractor will finance and build the Stadium through a pre-fianance basis. This sports infrastructure is critical project in our preparations to host the 2027 AFCON, and therefore, it will be fast-tracked for its timely completion.”
In 2010, President Museveni promised to construct Akii Bua Stadium, but his pledge has since been far from reality.
When Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania won the joint bid to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, Akii Bua Stadium is among the stadiums that were underlined as potential venues for the continental showpiece.
Nakivubo Stadium has since undergone redevelopment, while construction works at the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, are in the closing stages.
The other facility is the St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, that was also listed among the training facilities for AFCON 2027.
“I thank H.E President @KagutaMuseveni and the Minister of Education and Sports, First Lady @JanetMuseveni for identifying the contractor,” The minister concluded.
