Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has refuted allegations that it was planning to start taxing donations given to the Kabaka of Buganda, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II.

URA Commissioner General, Mr. John Musinguzi, stated on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, that URA has no plans to tax Buganda Kingdom donations, as earlier reported by some media outlets.

Musinguzi clarified that URA only taxes incomes, namely employment income through Pay As You Earn (PAYE) and business or property income.

Buganda’s premier, Charles Peter Mayiga, raised an alarm last year during the conclusion of the collection of the final ‘oluwalo’ of the year 2023. Mayiga stated that he had heard of plans to tax Buganda’s donations, something the Kingdom wasn’t ready to welcome.

The two parties have harmonized following URA’s visit to Buganda Kingdom on Tuesday. Mayiga reported that he and delegates from URA, who had paid him a visit, discussed various issues, including but not limited to taxation.

Musinguzi mentioned that during their meeting, they discussed ways to foster collaboration for shared progress and thanked Mayiga for his steadfast support.

“We had a fruitful dialogue on tax-related matters and how to foster collaboration for our shared progress. I deeply value his steadfast support and look forward to continued cooperation,” he said.

Buganda collected about UGX 1.5 billion from ‘oluwalo’ last year. Mayiga mentioned that the money is used to finance the Kingdom’s projects such as scholarships.
