Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has commended Uganda Baati for its consistent tax compliance and unwavering commitment to integrity. This recognition came during a meeting between URA Customs Commissioner Abel Kagumire and a delegation from Uganda Baati, led by Business Head George Arodi.
Kagumire lauded Uganda Baati as a steadfast and tax-compliant partner. He also extended congratulations to the team for reaching a significant milestone on the eve of their 60th-anniversary celebration this year. “We applaud you as pioneers in the steel sector for the pivotal role you have played and continue to play in the economy. Your commitment to excellence and maintaining high-quality standards in the building solutions industry is commendable,” he remarked.
George Arodi, Business Head of Uganda Baati, expressed gratitude for URA’s efforts in streamlining the clearance process for imports and exports, particularly in the manufacturing sector. Arodi highlighted Uganda Baati’s participation in the Authorized Economic Operator program, emphasizing the seamless execution of cross-border trade and the positive impact on fostering a culture of compliance within their team.
In addition, the Customs Commissioner encouraged Uganda Baati to collaborate on skills building for their team. “We seek to equip our field teams with practical industry knowledge. We aspire to benchmark or partner with Uganda Baati to integrate this knowledge into our staff, allowing for a better understanding of the manufacturing industry to guide policy formulations and streamline their duties,” Kagumire emphasized.
During the discussion, both Uganda Baati and the URA team underscored the importance of enacting stringent policies to combat counterfeits and substandard goods. Arodi expressed concerns about the devaluation of quality products due to the influx of such goods into the market, leading to substantial losses for compliant market players.
Reassuringly, the Customs Commissioner stated, “We are actively enforcing customs regulations and conducting inspections at ports of entry to prevent the entry of substandard and fake goods into the country. Rest assured, we are taking decisive action to eradicate this vice.”
Kagumire expressed appreciation for the engaged dialogue and urged other sector players to emulate Uganda Baati’s commitment to being a compliant partner.
