Men dressed in UPDF uniform reportedly obstructed the Opposition on Monday from conducting an oversight visit at the Lubowa Specialized Hospital. The Parliament had recently approved an additional Shs 2.7 billion for supervising the project.
The Opposition members expressed their intent to carry out their duties, waiting for responsible individuals to open the gate for them to enter and investigate the ongoing activities at the Ministry of Health installation. They acknowledged the role of security forces in maintaining peace and order but emphasized that they did not require police security. They suggested that if police wanted to provide security, they were welcome, and they could witness the proceedings as taxpayers and potential beneficiaries of the hospital’s services.
Ssenyonyi, a spokesperson for the Opposition, highlighted the significant financial investment in the Lubowa project. In December 2023, a supplementary request of Shs 2.7 billion was made for the project’s supervision. The Opposition’s goal was to inspect the site and understand the activities being supervised by the government, as the exterior view did not reveal much. They hoped to enter and witness any ongoing work, particularly underground activities.
Nakaseke Central Member of Parliament, Allan Mayanja, criticized the treatment of the Opposition at the site, drawing attention to previous incidents where even the Minister of Health, Ruth Aceng, was reportedly denied access. This led to questions about the authority held by Lubowa Hospital Proprietor, Enrica Pinetti.
The Opposition’s visit aimed to shed light on the substantial investment in the Lubowa project and ensure transparency in the government’s supervision of the facility.
