President Museveni has dispatched a government delegation, headed by former Prime Minister Rt Hon Dr Ruhakana Rugunda, to attend the funeral of the late President of Namibia, Hage Geingob, who passed away on February 4, 2024.

In a communication through his Principal Private Secretary, Dr. Kenneth Omona, President Museveni specified that the delegation would also include State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon John Mulimba, and Presidential Advisor, Mrs. Joan Kategaya. They will be accompanied by a team from the Uganda High Commission in Pretoria, South Africa.

Both Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda and Mrs. Joan Kategaya had previously collaborated with Mr. Geingob at the United Nations Institute for Namibia during their exile in Zambia in the 1970s.

The funeral ceremonies for the late President Hage Geingob are scheduled to occur on 24th and 25th February 2024 in the Namibian capital, Windhoek.

Recently, President Museveni acknowledged the significant contributions of the late Geingob to the cause of freedom in Namibia and Africa at large.

“I first heard of H.E. Geingob in the 1970s when he became the head of the Namibian Institute in Lusaka,” stated Museveni in his condolence message. “Indeed, some Ugandans, such as Joan Kategaya, worked there, during the time many of them were in exile, running away from the terror of Idi Amin.”

“The Namibian Institute, I think, was training Namibians in exile so that they could be able to run their country after independence. When the NRM came to power in 1986, Mzee Sam Nujoma came here, and we were ready to support SWAPO as we indeed supported ANC and PAC.”

Namibia’s Vice President, Dr. Nangolo Mbumba, 82, has been sworn in as the new president as the country prepares for presidential elections in November 2024.
