Dozens of lawmakers, serving Cabinet Ministers, and numerous supporters of Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba gathered in Naguru, a Kampala suburb, for the launch of the rebranding of MK Movement to the Patriotic League of Uganda. The civic organization aims to mobilize the masses towards embracing patriotism and focuses on promoting good citizenship, national pride, national service, protection of vulnerable persons, combating corruption and wastage of public resources, and environmental protection.
The launch event was attended by notable figures, including Agriculture Minister Hon Frank Tumwebaze, Microfinance Minister Haruna Kasolo, ICT and National Guidance State Minister Hon. Godfrey Kabbyanga Baluku, and former State Minister for Primary Health Care Mike Mukula, among others. The central committee members of MK, led by Igara East MP Michael Mawanda, and former Kampala Mayor candidate Cedric Babu were also present.
The establishment of the Patriotic League of Uganda provides legal protection for Gen Muhoozi’s supporters to engage in mobilization activities. Gen Muhoozi, currently serving as a Senior Presidential Advisor in charge of Special Operations, is expected to run for President in the 2026 elections.
Supporters expressed eagerness for change and emphasized the need for patriotism to address corruption and other challenges. Gen Muhoozi, although not present at the launch, has previously expressed his intention to stand in the 2026 elections to succeed his father, President Museveni.
The proclamation about the change of name from MK Movement to the Patriotic League of Uganda outlined the organization’s objectives and commitment to non-partisanship, non-denominationalism, and non-sectarianism in its efforts to revive patriotism among Ugandans. The launch marked a significant step in the civic movement’s mission to contribute to national unity, peace, and stability through fostering a sense of responsibility and loyalty to Uganda.
