The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, on Saturday morning led a team from the Mbarara Archdiocese Development Association (AMDA) in a golf tournament at the Uganda Golf Club in a bid to raise funds for the Nebbi Catholic Diocese. Nebbi will be hosting the national celebrations for Uganda Martyrs Day on June 3rd, 2024.

Organized by the Archdiocese of Mbarara Development Association (AMDA), in collaboration with the Nebbi Diocese, the fundraising efforts have seen an array of activities, aimed at raising the required 1.7 billion shillings for the event. The event aimed to not only raise funds, but also create awareness and show solidarity with Nebbi Diocese.

Speaking at the tournament, Tayebwa emphasized that “This is not just about that diocese.”

“This is a national function. So, we must all come in to support.” He also commended AMDA for their initiative, stating that “events like this are important because, on top of creating awareness, they are healthy,” said Tayebwa.

“They play a crucial role in promoting tourism and attracting high-value visitors whose purchasing power is much, much, much higher above that of an average tourist.”

The fundraising efforts extend beyond the golf course. Football, netball, and volleyball tournaments are also planned, alongside a Mass led by the Bishop of Nebbi at Kitante tomorrow.

Fred Jachan Omach, a former Member of Parliament and Minister of State, further emphasized, “Nebbi Diocese requires 1.7 billion shillings to organize the event.”

Chris Gumisiriza, the Chairperson of AMDA, said, “I encourage all members of the public, regardless of your faith or whatever area you come from, to come and join hands with Nebbi diocese and raise funds to support the June 3rd celebrations.”

He further stated that, “Mass will be held tomorrow at Kitante, where most reverend Okorach will be leading the mass and we shall handle whatever, we shall have mobilized to the bishop. For now, we don’t have a figure, but we shall be able to announce it tomorrow when we are handing over.”
