A military police officer committed suicide after shooting at his wife in Kampala on Tuesday at 7:00 am. Corporal Andebo Collins, a military police officer attached to Makindye Military Police, and Atulinda Peroni, a civilian support staff, were involved in the incident. They had previously resided together in Lusaka Zone, Makindye 1, Makindye Division, before separating due to misunderstandings.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Collins, armed with an AK-47 rifle and dressed in civilian attire, confronted Peroni as she was boarding a motorcycle. He opened fire, causing her to sustain a shattered arm. Collins then turned the firearm on himself, resulting in his death upon arrival at Mulago Hospital’s casualty ward.
Katwe Police Station and the Military Police responded to the scene, rushing Atulinda to Nsambya Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The incident follows a concerning trend of soldiers misusing firearms in recent years.
In March 2023, a UPDF soldier opened fire at “Naiga” Bar in Boston Village, Salama Parish, Makindye Division, killing four people. The 2021 Annual Crime Report indicated a rise in processed suicide scenes, reaching 615 cases. The Uganda Police National Emergency Call Center received 374 calls reporting various cases, including suicide, attempted suicide, murder, infanticide, and poisoning. Of these, police responded to 332 cases.
Atulinda’s body was taken to City Mortuary Mulago for a postmortem examination. The police established a history of relationship issues between the duo spanning approximately five years. The alleged killer firearm and 13 cartridges were recovered from the scene. Investigations are ongoing to comprehensively understand the circumstances surrounding this tragic event, with statements recorded from witnesses to aid the inquiry, according to Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Spokesperson of Kampala Metropolitan Police.
