Three Ugandan fishermen have been reportedly abducted by authorities from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Lake Edward, prompting concerns and calls from Ugandan authorities for their safe return.

According to Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga, the fishermen—Bernard Karungi (46), Joseph Aturinda (31), and Banetti Byabagambi (34)—were apprehended near Ntungwa in Lake Edward last week. The DRC authorities claim that the fishermen strayed into their territorial waters.

The abducted fishermen are residents of Rwenshama landing site community in Mbwambara sub-county, Bujumbura.

Enanga stated, “Our territorial police in Kigezi Region, Rukungiri CPS, are working closely with the RDC and the Commandant Marines to secure the safe return of the abducted fishermen.”

This incident sheds light on the ongoing conflicts over fishing rights and territorial waters on the lakes bordering Uganda and the DRC. Enanga highlighted the persistent nature of these conflicts but assured that diplomatic channels and collaboration with relevant authorities in both countries are being utilized to secure the release of the fishermen.

“We are continuously striving to ensure the safe return of these three fishermen,” emphasized Enanga.
