Kisozi, Uganda | THE STAR KENYA | President William Ruto of Kenya, his Ugandan counterpart Yoweri Museveni, and ODM leader Raila Odinga held talks in Uganda. Photos shared by President Ruto on social media depicted the three leaders engaged in discussions while overseeing a grazing field with cattle.
President Museveni, known for his pastoralist lifestyle, often spends his free time tending to his cattle. During the meeting, the leaders discussed critical issues affecting both Kenya and Uganda, with a particular focus on energy and petroleum. Additionally, the trio addressed the declared candidacy of Raila Odinga for the chairmanship of the African Union Commission (AUC).
Raila Odinga officially declared his interest in the AUC chairmanship on February 15, expressing his readiness for the role. The announcement followed talks between Raila and former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo at Raila’s Karen home. Obasanjo is reported to have played a role in brokering a deal that led to Bi-partisan Talks, ending anti-Ruto protests by the Azimio coalition.
The backing of one’s home country is a prerequisite for candidacy for the AUC chairmanship. The meeting between Presidents Ruto, Museveni, and Raila Odinga signals diplomatic engagements and discussions on regional and continental matters.
President Ruto’s government has expressed commitment to supporting Raila Odinga in his bid to clinch the chairmanship of the African Union Commission (AUC). This support reflects a diplomatic collaboration between the leaders, and President Ruto emphasized Kenya and Uganda’s dedication to strengthening their long-established diplomatic and economic ties.
The leaders are focused on fostering closer relations among the seven East African Community nations, working towards their shared goal of forming the East African Federation. This commitment signals a regional approach to cooperation and unity within the East African region.
