The Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU) is gearing up for its 14th Graduation ceremony on March 7, 2024, to be held at the Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala. The ceremony will witness the graduation of 250 candidates: 231 for the Certified Public Accountants (CPA) course, 4 for the Certified Tax Advisor (CTA), and 15 for the Accounting Technicians Diploma (ATD). All these graduands successfully completed their studies in 2023.

The examination schedule for the year 2023 comprised three diets in May, August, and November. These exams marked the inaugural sessions held under the revised syllabuses launched in January 2023. Notably, the CPA graduands represent the first cohort to undertake the computer-based examinations for the fast paper of the course, Integration of Knowledge. This addition was introduced to enhance the market-readiness of CPA graduates.

Since its inception, the Institute has conferred a total of 4,970 CPA graduates, 81 CTA graduates, and 1,840 ATD graduates during the 14 graduation ceremonies.

The increasing numbers of qualified accountants are pivotal for Uganda’s economy, which boasts one of the highest global entrepreneurial records. These professionals play a crucial role in supporting the growing number of businesses.

The CPA course aims to produce competent professional accountants capable of applying their knowledge, skills, and values to create a meaningful impact in organizations and economies. Similarly, CTA produces adept tax advisors contributing to the country’s economic development, while ATD focuses on nurturing supporting accounting staff.

CPA Derick Nkajja, the Secretary/CEO of ICPAU, emphasized the importance of accountants being sufficiently skilled to effectively support organizations. He stated, “Professional accountancy education is designed to offer comprehensive knowledge and skills, and also impart the desired values and attributes required for the market.”

Furthermore, a professional accountancy qualification is a prerequisite for membership enrolment with a professional accountancy organization like ICPAU, ensuring the proper regulation of accountants, noted CPA Nkajja. The Institute actively adopts various interventions to enhance the quality of professional accountancy education. These interventions include regular syllabus reviews to align learning outcomes with the dynamic business environment, as well as reviewing and recognizing tuition providers. Commencing in 2024, the Institute has introduced a tuition providers masterclass as part of quality assurance in professional accountancy education.

Additionally, the Institute is set to conduct a study to identify the factors affecting performance, reflecting its commitment to continuous improvement in the field of accountancy education.
