The State Minister for Energy, Hon. Okasaai Opolot, has officially commissioned the 83 Megawatts Achwa Hydro Power plant in Atanga sub-county, Pader district, Uganda. The project is part of the Power Corridor designed to extend power to the West Nile Region through the Gulu – Olwiyo – Nebbi – Arua Transmission Line.
Minister Okasaai highlighted the project’s objectives, including addressing social challenges in affected communities through the employment of semi-skilled and unskilled labor, construction of resettlement homes, and the implementation of community development and livelihood restoration programs. The transmission line, connecting the Achwa-Gulu-Agago 132kV transmission line, is expected to alleviate power challenges in Gulu and surrounding districts in Northern Uganda.
The Chief Executive Officer of Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL), Mr. Joshua Karamagi, noted the successful completion of the project within 18 months of construction. The Achwa-Gulu-Agago transmission line is anticipated to save the government deemed energy costs totaling $2.5 million (9.7 billion shillings). The project, with a total cost of 40 million Euros, received financial aid from the German Development Bank (KfW). The commissioning marks a significant milestone in enhancing the energy infrastructure and availability in Uganda.
