Abidjan, IVORY COAST | THE INDEPENDENT | DR Congo head coach Sébastien Desabre is optimistic about his team’s chances in the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations, expressing confidence after securing their first victory against Guinea in the quarter-finals.
The Leopards had previously drawn all four games against Zambia, Morocco, Tanzania, and Egypt. However, their 3-1 triumph over Guinea on Saturday secured them a spot in the semi-finals against hosts Cote d’Ivoire.
Desabre views the long-awaited win as a sign that his team is hitting form at the right moment in the competition. “This victory comes at the right time as we are gaining momentum in the competition. We won, we drew, but did not lose,” said the Frenchman.
Despite acknowledging the challenges ahead, Desabre believes DR Congo has the potential to win the tournament. “It would be foolish not to believe in the final victory. But it will be difficult,” he conceded.
The coach is confident in the attacking prowess of DR Congo, citing forwards like Bakambu, Banza, and Mayele Fiston. “We have forwards like Bakambu, Banza, and Mayele Fiston. We knew it was a matter of time before we succeeded,” Desabre insisted.
With momentum building and the prospect of a first AFCON crown in sight, Desabre is daring to dream. “When you reach the semi-finals, you first want to reach the final. And if you have the chance to reach the final, you want to win it,” he said.
As they finally find their attacking spark, Desabre and DR Congo are optimistic that their AFCON journey may have a glorious ending.
