WAPO: Russian authorities release Alexei Navalny’s body to his mother for burial after a week-long standoff
The body of the Russian opposition leader, who died suddenly in prison on Feb. 16, was released to his mother after she said repeatedly that officials were pressuring her into holding a small, private funeral. It was still not clear if authorities would allow a large public ceremony, Navalny’s press secretary said. An official death certificate said Navalny died of “natural causes,” but his family and close associates say he was murdered and accused officials of withholding his corpse to cover up the evidence.
