Ugandan LGBTQ activist Steven Kabuye is nursing wounds following a Wednesday attack that almost claimed his life.
Kabuye was attacked on Wednesday, January 3, 2024 in Kajjansi Town Council en route to his workplace.
He said the assailant attempted to cut off his neck.
“I used my arm to protect my neck and that is how I got a deep wound on my arm,” he recalled.
“The attacker also stabbed me in the stomach,” he cried.
Videos from the crime scene showed a table knife stuck in Kabuye’s stomach.
Kabuye narrowly survived after making an alarm that scared off the attackers.
He is currently admitted at Namulondo Medical centre in Bwebajja.
Speaking for Kampala Metropolitan Police, Patrick Onyango said in a statement that police detectives had visited the victim at the hospital and established that he is out of danger.
Onyango says that two unknown men riding a motorcycle approached Kabuye and the passenger jumped off and made an attempt to behead Kabuye.
Kabuye guarded himself using his hand thus sustaining a cut on the hand.
Onyago further stated that the victim revealed that he has been receiving threats since March 2023, and that he had travelled abroad in June and only returned in December for Christmas.
The attack on Kabuye has seen many LGBTQ activists come out to condemn the attack on social media.
LGBTQ activists have continued to allege that their lives are under threat following the passing of the Anti-Homosexuality Bill 2023.
However, such attacks against LGBT communities are rare. Police are still investigating the matter.
